The Most-Popular WFH Office, According to the Internet

Thanks to COVID-19, work has looked different for most Americans this year. Whether you take work calls from your couch, Zoom in to meetings from your dining room table, or “work” from the comfort of your bed, gone are the days of killing time in the breakroom or forgetting your lunch at home. Now, many of us are hunkered down at home instead of at the office—which means there’s never been a better time to invest in your work from home setup. 

So, what does the crowd have to say about the perfect desk color? Which desk chair do people deem best? To find out, the team at Viasat Savings analyzed social media images, Google shopping searches, and product reviews (1,200 data points total). 

According to our research, the best offices are actual offices (re: not that comfy couch we spoke of earlier). If you don’t have an existing room to spare, your next best bet is to set up shop in a quiet corner.

Methodology

To narrow down our Instagram search, we searched twenty different hashtags relevant to home office setups. To qualify for our analysis, each Instagram post had to have at least 300 likes and be published between March 2020 and September 2020. From there, we analyzed seven different data points:

  • Desk color 
  • Type of desk 
  • Type of computer
  • Computer accessories 
  • Visible headphones 
  • Type of chair
  • Main office color scheme  

In total, this amounted to 1,200 data points. We also analyzed Amazon data to find the average cost and style of highly-rated desks and chairs based on products with a 4.5+ star rating and a minimum of 500 reviews. From here, we used Google Shopping trends to find the most-popular desk and chair in each state.
